When it comes to making money on the Internet, without large amounts of traffic coming to your website, making money is an absolute impossibility. But having large amounts of traffic at your website doesn't guarantee that you'll make money.

It is not enough to focus just on traffic-building. You must also focus on turning that traffic into buyers. Most people doing business on the Internet focus most of their time on traffic-building. Maybe that's because it is indeed important to have massive traffic coming to your website, and it gives your products and services exposure to large amounts of people.

But any kind of traffic will not do. Your traffic must be targeted. You can have thousands of visitors coming to your website, and make only 1 or 2 sales. This is a common occurrence with most marketers on the Internet. They have low conversion rates. A huge portion of their traffic is not buying their products and services.

The main reason for low conversion rates is the result of two factors: keywords and content. When people are searching for information on the Internet, they use search terms or keywords. If you are marketing products and services online, then your keywords must line up with the content at your website.

The visitors coming to your website must land on a web page that relates to the link that directed them there. For example, if a person is searching for information on the subject of hang-gliding equipment, but he ends up on a website that sells parachute equipment, this will result in no sale.

Your keywords must closely correspond to the content and products at your website. If not, and when people click on the links that point to your website, you will make no sale. In other words, the traffic to your website must be targeted. This lack of congruency between keywords and web content is very frustrating to people because people know what they are looking for.

Your ability to sell products and services through your website must be built upon a successful marketing plan that's based on keywords that generate traffic to your website. Then when visitors arrive at your website, the content should correspond to the keyword and link that pointed them there. If your content is interesting, you increase your chances of making a sale.

Keywords are absolutely crucial to the success of your web business. And your job as marketer and merchant is to use keywords and content as a bridge to provide people with the things they want.
